CLAMP struck gold in Cardcaptor Sakura. So, why not add a movie? Cardcaptor Sakura: the Movie is the first of two Cardcaptor Sakura films. It offers an interesting “side story” per se for the first part of the series.
The characters in this film are quite average and don’t deviate much from their personalities in the series. However while that might seem a bit negative, that entails the likeable personality of Sakura. Everything in this movie is done quite well, but where I feel plenty of praise is worthy of going to are the seiyuu, starting with Tange Sakura’s rendition of Sakura and continuing through with the rest of the characters. Some examples, are also some well know names such as Ogata Megumi (Yukito Tsukishiro) and Seki Tomokazu (Touya Kinomoto).
The music, for the most part, was fair, but the end song was really good and stood out in comparison. “Tooi Kono Machi de” is an absolutely beautiful song. The vocals and melody are lovely and the overall serene quality works. The ending of the film was quite nice, however I feel as if it ended a bit abruptly. Abrupt in how after the ending of Sakura’s confrontation with the mysterious lady (which was wonderful) quickly cut to the ending scene (however not end credits).
Then, the plot is also interesting in the involvement of the mysterious lady (who is not in the regular series) who wants to meet with Clow Reed. It is not a radically new plot as many aspects of Cardcaptor Sakura are still visible within the film. It is interesting in taking whatever one has watched throughout the series and applying it to a new dynamic storyline. While this is that this does not really add any enhancement to the plot in regards to the overall series, it provides a new and enjoyable and intriguing storyline.
